Tilt-and-turn and outward-opening casement windows can use similar PVC-u systems, but they solve different access, ventilation and space-planning problems. The correct trade specification starts with the room, elevation and operating constraints rather than appearance alone. Where each opening type works best

A casement is familiar, economical to specify and suitable across many low-rise projects. A tilt-and-turn sash opens inwards: the tilt position provides controlled background or purge ventilation, while the turn position gives a wide opening and internal access to the outside face. That inward arc must be coordinated with reveals, blinds, furniture and guarding. Neither opening mode should be treated as automatically satisfying escape, ventilation or fall-prevention requirements; the project designer must check the current Scottish standards.

  1. Confirm structural-opening and manufacturing dimensions.
  2. Record viewed-from convention, handing and handle position.
  3. Check room clearance, cills, extensions, glazing and ventilation.
  4. Obtain the system-specific size, reinforcement and hardware limits before sign-off.

Questions to settle with the project team

Ask how occupants will ventilate and clean the window in normal use, not only how the sash appears on an elevation. On exposed façades, consider whether an outward-opening casement projects into a path or is difficult to control in wind. For tilt-and-turn, measure the complete inward envelope and check handle access. If an opening is intended to contribute to escape, guarding or ventilation, obtain the designer’s stated performance requirement and confirm that the proposed size and hardware meet it. Compare like-for-like quotations: glass, vents, restrictors, finish and hardware can change the decision more than the frame label.

Evidence and sign-off

Requirements vary with building type, occupancy, warrant date, product system and contract responsibility. Check current primary guidance rather than carrying assumptions from a previous job.
