How to Determine the Quality of Trade Windows

Start with the Profile System

The PVC-u profile is the structural backbone of any window. Quality differences in the profile have a direct impact on thermal performance, long-term stability, and the ease of installation. When assessing a window, look for:

  • Multi-chamber design — better profiles use multiple internal chambers to trap air and improve thermal efficiency. A cross-section view (or ask the supplier for a profile data sheet) will show the chamber layout clearly
  • Wall thickness — the outer walls of quality profiles are typically 2.5mm or greater. Thin walls are a common cost-cutting measure and compromise structural strength
  • Lead-free formulation — reputable manufacturers use lead-free PVC-u compounds; ask for confirmation if it’s not stated

Examine the Welded Corners

The corner welds on a PVC-u window frame are one of the most telling indicators of manufacturing quality. A good weld is:

  • Clean and consistent — minimal flash (the bead of melted PVC squeezed out during welding) and an even seam
  • Properly cleaned — high-quality manufacturers use automated corner cleaners that remove flash precisely without damaging the profile surface
  • Structurally sound — apply gentle hand pressure to the corner of the frame; there should be no flex or movement

Poorly welded corners are a common failure point. Windows with inconsistent welds are more likely to allow water ingress and will weaken over time, particularly in exposed locations.

Assess the Glazing Unit

The sealed glazing unit typically accounts for 60–70% of a window’s thermal performance. When assessing quality:

  • Spacer bar type — warm-edge spacer bars (typically made from thermoplastic rather than aluminium) significantly reduce heat loss at the edge of the unit. Look for a dark or grey spacer rather than a silver aluminium bar
  • Gas fill — argon-filled units outperform air-filled equivalents; ask for confirmation and check the unit label or documentation
  • Low-e glass coating — a low-emissivity coating on the inner pane reduces radiant heat loss; it should be specified as standard on any energy-rated window
  • Unit seal integrity — inspect the edge of the unit for any signs of seal failure (fogging or moisture between the panes). This is a manufacturing defect that should not be present on new product

Check the Hardware

Hardware quality is often where budget windows cut corners most aggressively. On a quality window:

  • Handles operate smoothly with no stiffness or looseness, and the fixing screws pull into solid reinforcement in the profile — not just PVC
  • Hinges feel solid and support the sash weight without the sash dropping when open; quality hinges carry load ratings and are typically stainless steel or corrosion-resistant
  • Locking mechanisms engage positively and without excessive force; the keep (receiver) is fixed into the frame at multiple points
  • Weather seals compress consistently around the full perimeter of the sash when closed; gaps or inconsistent compression will cause draught and water penetration

Review Independent Certifications

Certifications are the most reliable indicator of independently verified quality. A supplier who cannot provide documentation for the following should be treated with caution:

  • BFRC Window Energy Rating — independently assessed and rated A to G; most quality residential windows achieve A or A+
  • BSI Kitemark — demonstrates third-party testing against BS 6375 (weather performance) and other relevant standards
  • CE / UKCA marking — the essential declaration of conformity; mandatory for products supplied in Great Britain
  • PAS 24 — enhanced security testing required for new-build residential properties and Secured by Design schemes
  • Thermal transmittance (U-value) certificate — a specific tested figure for the window as a unit, not just the glazing

Consider the Manufacturing Process

Where and how windows are made directly affects consistency. A manufacturer with their own factory and in-house quality control is able to catch and correct issues before they leave the production line. Key questions to ask:

  • Is the window manufactured in-house or assembled from bought-in components?
  • What quality control checks are carried out at each stage of production?
  • Is the factory accredited to a quality management standard such as ISO 9001?
  • How are defective units identified and handled before despatch?

A Practical Quality Assessment: What to Do When Product Arrives on Site

Even with a trusted supplier, it’s good practice to inspect product on delivery before signing off. Check:

  • Dimensions match the order acknowledgement
  • No transit damage to frames, glazing, or hardware
  • Corner welds are clean and flush
  • Glazing units are clear with no seal failure
  • Hardware operates correctly
  • Colour and specification match what was ordered

Raise any issues with your supplier before installation. Fitting a damaged or incorrect window — even with the intention of sorting it later — complicates the claim and can leave you liable for rectification costs.
